These numbers will help keep people out of trouble as every tank of fuel is not the same quality. A little more boost might be OK with some fuel you might get, but if your running right where the engine wants to knock, your asking for trouble. Some knock is not going to kill your engine instantly, it will slowly eat away at the engine and it could be a a year or two before the engine is done. Mild knock slowly makes mild imperfections in the heads and top of pistons, once this damage occurs, the engine will knock even sooner from the hot spots created. Hard detonation can break the ring lands and do instant damage. This has the same effect as taking a hammer to the top of the piston, while the crank is pushing the piston up. Detonation spikes can easily be 2000 PSI extra pressure pushing down on the piston while the crank is pushing the piston up. This is why rod bearings are easily damaged from detonation. Bearings become smashed from detonation and push out the sides and crumble, the pieces of bearing tend to eat up the rest of the engine.
